Mole screening is an important part of a health check because you may detect a skin cancer at an early stage. There are 3 types of skin cancer and the one that develops from moles is called 'melanoma'. You should examine your moles for changes in:

  • Size (getting bigger).
  • Shape (becoming asymmetrical with an irregular edge).
  • Colour (an uneven colour with different shades).

Your moles can be examined more closely in clinic by using a dermatoscope. If there is any doubt about the diagnosis, then the mole will be removed by excision. Other moles can be removed by shave biopsy if they have become a nuisance or unsightly.
