Skin Tags
Skin tags are soft, harmless growths composed of loose collagen and skin tissue. They are extremely common and often appear where skin rubs against skin or clothing. Although medically benign, they can catch on jewellery, cause irritation or affect confidence.
Typical locations
- Neck and collar line
- Underarms
- Eyelids
- Groin folds
- Under the breasts
Skin tags are not contagious and do not turn into skin cancer. Their appearance can vary from tiny flattened bumps to larger stalk-like lesions.
Why they develop
Contributing factors include friction, hormonal changes, ageing and weight gain. They are more frequent in people with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes.
Treatment and removal
Skin tags can be removed easily using minor procedures:
- Cryotherapy for small superficial tags
- Cautery or snip removal under local anaesthetic
Removal provides immediate improvement and recurrence at the same site is uncommon.
